Epic Fantasy for lovers of the genre, old and new

Do not judge this series based on the Disney movie: the movie was just plain terrible, for one; this story is also darker and bloodier than anything Disney has had the cajones to animate so far. Not gratuitous, mind you, but it would be like cracking open a collection of the Brothers Grimm and expecting to read the Disneyfied stories.

I cut my fantasy eyeteeth on this series when I was ten and, 21 years later, it still holds a very special place in my heart. Some young readers may prefer to hold off on this series for another couple years, depending on their maturity.

Parents, if you are worried about whether or not your kids are ready for epic battles between good and evil, I suggest treating yourself and giving this series a read. Worst case scenario, you put the books on a shelf for a little while to share at a later date. I can't think of another series off the top of my head that I would better enjoy talking with the younger generations about.

    Great for young readers!!

I have a 10 year old son who doesn't enjoy reading. Basically does it because he has to for school so I had a difficult time finding something that interested him. These adventure/fantasy books are great! After he read the first book he actually asked if he could get the others in the series!! Just what a mom wants to hear!!
