Richard Romanus has written a truly extraordinary novel. Chrysalis is a phenomenal achievement not only because it tackles the great themes -- war and civil war, heroism and sacrifice, love and loss, joy and misery, inner conflict, and the struggle merely to survive -- but because it handles them so adroitly. The reader does not see the author at work, carefully crafting the mechanisms of plot, character development, action and feeling, and hardly suspects that in the end a powerful transformation is about occur. When it comes, the whole novel reveals itself in a new light. It is as if one suddenly understands everything, every twist and turn so incomprehensible in its seemingly random place in the course of events. It is magic in its finest sense. From what sleeve did Mr. Romanus pull such an epiphany?! The result is awe inspiring and fantastically satisfying. Chrysalis is not just a good read. It belongs on the short list of books one loves, and reads again and again. Do not wander off and think about it. I implore you to read it now!
