Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Less intricate and lighter than much of the versatile author's previous works Shadow of a Hero; A Bone from a Dry Sea, this blithe novel introduces a wimpy female whippet named Chuck and Danielle, her amiable owner. Danielle's frazzled mother repeatedly threatens to give away the cowering canine, and each time the girl insists, 'It's our duty to keep her. One day Chuck's going to save the universe.' In seven breezy episodes, Chuck inadvertently emerges-to greater or lesser degree-a heroine, until Danielle's mother finally admits that Chuck has come close enough to saving the universe. Though some of these capers are more diverting than others, in each Dickinson makes droll excursions into Chuck's mind, from which vantage point a toilet 'makes coming-to-get-you noises' and a vacuum cleaner 'gets out of its lair in the hallway and goes roaring around the flat looking for whippets to chew up, while brave, brave Danielle holds on to its tail and tries to stop it.'.
School Library Journal
Gr 3-5Andrew Sachs reads Peter Dickinson's charming story BDD, 1996 about Chuck, the whippet, and his owner, Danielle. Each chapter is a different episode in their adventures. Chuck is presented as the lovable, though somewhat neurotic dog that she isafraid of toilets flushing and even falling teddy bears. The author's omniscient point of view lets us understand Chuck. We learn, for instance, why Chuck feels compelled to lap certain human faces. Meanwhile, Danielle is a child completely devoted to her dog and on a mission to reassure her mom that Chuck should remain a permanent member of the family. The story comes alive with Sachs' spirited reading.Marcia Brightman, Mark's Meadow Laboratory School, Amherst, MA
Carolyn Phelan
This clever episodic story set in England introduces Danielle and her dog, Chuck. A well-bred, high-strung whippet, Chuck is not just nervous but downright terrified of everything from cats to pigeons to stuffed animals to paper bags. Each chapter involves Danielle and Chuck in a different set of circumstances (foiling a purse snatcher, setting loose a herd of cows, befriending an unpromising new neighbor), and each ends with a running joke about Danielle's desire to see Chuck save the universe. Woven into the story is the recurring theme of Danielle's curiosity about her father's identity. When her dad makes a cameo appearance near the end of the book, Danielle finally discovers answers to her questions and learns why he has never been part of her life. Although the book has its thoughtful moments, the tone never stays serious for long. The staccato writing is eminently readable, the depictions of Chuck's weird worldview are perceptive, and many of the scenes are laugh-out-loud funny. Absolutely entertaining both for kids reading alone or for parents and teachers reading aloud.

    A Whippet In A Book

A book with a Whippet made my daughter happy, but wasn't thrilled with the overly neurotic tongue-in-cheek depiction of the breed. An enjoyable light read for preteens.
