Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Mary Quattlebaum
What do a puppy, a kitten, a bunny and a fawn have in common? They are all the names of baby animals. Aaron Zenz introduces a crew of young critters in rhyming verse and bright, cheery art that, he says, took 56 colored pencils to create. Adorable hatchlings, whelps, puggles and kids bounce, pounce, sing and snooze through the pages and finish by identifying themselves with their adult names so you can match the calf with the cow, camel, whale and hippo, the cheeper with the quail and the spat with the oyster. As with classic nursery rhymes, this delightful book will stand up to repeat readings. Reviewer: Mary Quattlebaum
School Library Journal
PreS—Large toddler-friendly illustrations and rhyming text picture and name 54 baby animals ranging from the familiar (puppy, kitten, fawn) to the unfamiliar (cria, eyas, puggle). However, despite the large variety of creatures, there is an uncanny similarity among them. Rounded square faces, each with a humanlike countenance, smile at readers. On one spread, the goat kid and the human "kid" look amazingly alike. Other animals are even more difficult to discern one from another. A helpful pictorial spread at the conclusion of the book identifies each animal and matches it to its baby name. Although the artistic style doesn't lend itself to scientific identification, children will find the colored pencil drawings likable. The verse moves readers from page to page with just enough text to keep young listeners happy.—Carolyn Janssen, Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, OH

Don't let the beautiful illustrations fool you - this isn't just a book for babies and toddlers. First and second graders will be learning words they've never heard before, a boost to vocabulary and possibly also a boost in interest to animal families! A must-have for libraries!

The adorable illustrations of baby animals will have you saying, "AWWWWE - HOW CUTE!" on every page. As important (if not more so) is that your child (and maybe even you!) will learn lots of baby animal names. My three-year-old is using vocabulary words (cygnet, puggle, leveret) that surprise her preschool teachers. And she is eager to try out her new knowledge to identify the baby animals on our next zoo trip! Thank Mr. Zenz for a wonderful new picture book to add to our collection. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
