VOYAAGERANGE: Ages 15 to Adult.
The prophecy states that the emperor's son will be born a demon, but when his wife gives birth to twin boys, the emperor must make a devastating choice: Which is the evil son? His life saved by a mother who begged for banishment over death, Chunchu struggles to survive in a world of violence and death. Sung-Jae's story slams into action from the very beginning and then gradually introduces the characters through chance meetings and flashbacks. Because this first volume is mostly scene setting, the multitude of characters initially can be confusing. By the end, however, they have begun to take shape, and readers are left eager to read more of their story. The elements of the plot are revealed slowly, and although readers will occasionally be able to guess what is coming next, there are enough twists to keep things interesting. Byung-Jin has a unique art style, with cleanly drawn faces and settings, expressive eyes, and fast-paced but clear action sequences. Sound effects have been left in Korean with the English translations next to them, and the book is in the traditional left-to-right format. Overall it has the look and feel of a martial arts movie, including bloody violence and rough language, and will appeal to readers looking for action with a little angst. Reviewer: Snow Wildsmith
