Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Jessica Hwang, MD (University of Chicago Medical Center)
Description: This update of a 2000 book arrives at an opportune time when the rate of diabetes is rapidly increasing, more is being described about different types, and treatment options are changing.
Purpose: This book gives a concise overview of different types of diabetes, reviews pharmacotherapy, and emphasizes the systemic nature of diabetes. The topics covered are broad and include diabetes from hemochromatosis and PCOS to issues related to bariatric surgery.
Audience: The audience includes general practitioners, nurses, students, and doctors in training. The authors are trained in general medicine and endocrinology and provide a resource that approaches diabetes in a more general way.
Features: This pocketbook touches upon the different types of diabetes, management strategies, acute- and chronic-associated complications. It makes appropriate use of many bulleted tables, although some of the tables for treatment of diabetic emergencies such as DKA/HONK are oversimplified. A brief overview with specifics on initial dosing of insulin should be included. And, as the book points out, diabetes requires lifestyle modification in addition to pharmacotherapy. A few high-yield, one-page information sheets on anything from nutrition to helpful tips on starting insulin that could be copied for patients would be helpful, especially for those seeing patients in the hospital or the clinic.
Assessment: In its attempt to briefly discuss many topics, this book is slightly overambitious. There is definitely a need for a new edition, but since this topic is so extensive, perhaps it is best delivered through two separate books, one with an inpatient focus and one with an outpatient focus, which can complement each other but allow for slightly more elaboration on topics.
