This is the first edition of a soft bound multidisciplinary hand book of critical care for the adult patient. Presented is a discussion of common problems with simple rules for resolution. The book is designed to incorporate a minimum use of space and avoids excessive detail. The medical student and junior house officer is an appropriate reader for this work. The authors are intensive care consultants in the United Kingdom. Thirteen chapters with a brief appendix containing drug information are included in this pocket -sized hand book. The table of contents lists chapters and subtitles so that specific issues can be readily reviewed. The text of each chapter is brief with frequent use of figures, boxes, and texture of type to highlight key points. References are not provided. A brief but useful index concludes this work. After presentation of introductory comments and basic principles of patient assessment, critical care is presented on an organ system basis. Concluding chapters describe considerations specific to trauma, infection, and the conduct of intensive care unit procedures. This book is a worthy companion for the student beginning a critical care rotation. Details of pathology and physiology are not included, thus a major text must be used with this book. Perhaps the most significant draw back of the material presented is a clear orientation to the student and junior house officer working in the United Kingdom and other hospitals in this system. Differences in care approach are reflected in medications utilized and cardiac resuscitation therapy. Nonetheless, there are critical care pearls to be found here.
From the Publisher
This superb little book offers a wealth of information, practical advice and food for thought for all trainees in critical care. It will be useful for students and doctors preparing for their first exposure to intensive care, or for more experienced trainees needing essential and concise information.
