All Music Guide - Evan C. Gutierrez
Ciclon's 2005 self-titled release for Sony International would make fellow Colombianos Carlos Vives, Joe Arroyo, and Ricardo Montaner proud. The music of Ciclon finds it roots in vallenato, the folkloric music of Colombia typified by its celebration of the accordion. Songwriter/accordionist Humberto Judex is a native of Barranquilla, Colombia, while lead vocalist Carlos Mario Olivella hails from Vallepudar, often referred to as the vallenato world capitol. Though both the principal members are thoroughly steeped in this rich, beautiful style, their music doesn't stop there. Though both the principal members are thoroughly steeped in this rich, beautiful style, their music doesn't stop there. The colorful threads used in their tapestry are as diverse as flamenco vocalization, reggaeton rhythm tracks, salsa horn lines, Cuban percussion, and others too numerous to name. When the style weaving is done, the term vallenato is far too narrow. The group prefers a term that expresses both their inclusive tastes and national pride; "caribe Colombiano." Such an ambitious task as to both honor a musical tradition and define one's own unique artistic voice is a difficult task. Ciclon, with the help of industry hit-maker Sergio George, seems to have done just that. Ciclon is a lush, beautiful work, both completely Colombiano, and simultaneously a new sound that belongs to everyone. Without a single track falling short of excellent, Ciclon comes highly recommended.
