Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
This ultracool version of the fairy tale, set in Manhattan, updates the classic with singular flair. Taking current family trends into account, debut picture-book author Minters casts no aspersions on stepmothers and supplies her heroine with a largely absent mother. Cinder-Elly's elder sisters, on the other hand, dish out a full complement of scorn. There is indeed a ball--basketball--and a godmother provides Elly with a groovy pair of glass high-tops to wear to the big game. Naturally, ace hoop-shooter Prince Charming becomes smitten with Elly, loses track of her when the 10 p.m. witching curfew rolls around, then posts flyers advertising the shoe she leaves behind. Nearly every spread features six four-line stanzas, and rarely do the rhymes miss a beat. Lots of quotes enliven the verse, although it's occasionally hard to identify the speaker. Karas ( Into This Night We Are Rising ) doodles people, city buildings and objects in the margins; the cartoon figures interject lighthearted, childlike comments (after Godma costumes Elly, one of the extras says, ``You look great, El!''). Collages, wild patterns and funky fashions mimic music videos and build up the snazzy urban setting. An ideal match of artist and author. Ages 4-up. (Apr.)
Children's Literature
In this rap version of the traditional tale, Elly is the overworked younger sister of a family in New York City. She works doing chores all day and her mean sisters treat her terribly. One day, they all win tickets to a basketball game, in which Prince Charming is playing. Determined to win the Prince for themselves, the sisters go shopping for new clothes. Depressed and with nothing to wear, Elly has a surprise visit from her godmother, who gives her a new outfit and glass sneakers and changes a nearby trashcan into a bike. When Elly reaches the game on her new wheels, she loudly cheers for Prince Charming, her favorite basketball player. After the game, she meets up with Prince Charming, but her deadline of 10:00 p.m. comes sooner than she thinks. During her quick departure, she loses one glass sneaker. Distraught over the sudden disappearance of this beautiful girl, Prince Charming distributes flyers about the glass sneaker all over town. After looking high and low for Elly, he eventually finds her and treats her to a "happy ending."
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2-An annoying hodgepodge of stilted, cloying verse; a modern New York City setting; and traditional elements. But each of those elements is not quite what it should be. The sisters are cruel for no apparent reason (they're not even step-sisters), and Cinder-Elly inexplicably submits to their abuse. There's also a Prince Charming who is a basketball player and a glass sneaker instead of a slipper. The three girls are all invited to one of his games and there's really nothing stopping Cinder-Elly from going-her sisters are walking; so why can't she? Her ``Godmother'' appears and transforms her clothing into a new outfit, even though she looked just fine before. Prince notices her because she catches a flyaway ball and throws it back to him; he asks her out for a pizza. There are the expected problems with time running out and the search for the owner of the glass sneaker. And yes, ``everyone lived/Forever happy.'' Flat, modern watercolors try their best to add to the hip feeling this story tries to portray, but they are often as cluttered as the text. A jumbled path that leads nowhere.-Jane Marino, Scarsdale Public Library, NY

Cinder- Elly, a Modern Day Cinderella.

I realy liked this book because it is a modern version of Cinderella. In this book Elly is a sister of three who does all the chores around the house. Then one day she and her two sisters are invited to a basketball game, but her sisters don't let her go. Then once the sisters are gone Elly's fairy god-mother comes and makes her beautiful. During the game Elly meets the cutest and best player on the home team, Prince. After the game Elly and Prince are to go on a date, but when Prince is getting ready Elly's magic wears off. To find out how this book ends read it for yourself.

    Cinder-Elly,a Hip 50's Girl

I realy liked the way Cinder-Elly and Prince Charming met at a basketball game. I thought that was very creative. I also liked the way the author made every statement rhyme. Cinder-Elly is very different from other Cinderella books because of the way she meets prince charming, the time runs out and how Cinder-Elly has to leave the game without magic. I think this book was very well written and illustrated.

    Cinder-Elly, an Unbelievabely Hip Cinderella

Cinder-Elly is about a young girl and her two step sisters. They use the girl for work and chores, but when the girls find out they are invited to a basketball game, starring the famous prince. Cinder-Elly really wants to go. To find out what happens next you'll have to read this book. This story takes place when peace signs and hip music were big. It is interesting to see what the characters in the book wear.

    Cinder-Elly, a Modern Day Cinderella.

I liked the book Cinder-Elly. It has good illustrations and a very good and sometimes funny story. I liked this book because it was kind of a modern day Cinderella instead of the usual classic Cinderella with three step-sisters instead of two sisters in this book. Cinder-Elly is written by:Frances Minters and is recomended for ages 5-10.
