Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
A fetching pooch portrays a captivating and charming Cinderella in this droll retelling of the classic fairy tale. The canine Cinderella poses gracefully in her soot-covered apron, while wielding a mop and clutching a feather duster between her teeth. The illustrations will tickle kids' funny bones and add a new dimension to the story for parents or caregivers reading aloud. Cinderella helps her selfish stepsisters prepare for the ball, but no amount of grooming can transform them into blue-ribbon beauties. After they leave, she sits alone by the fireplace sobbing until her fairy godmother appears in the form of a lavishly dressed and star-bedecked goose. The fairy godmother, with a wave of her wand, turns a pumpkin into a golden carriage, which in this version is a flashy yellow convertible. The story follows along until Cinderella is fitted with the glass slipper and identified as the maiden who has captured the heart of the prince. Cinderella forgives her stepsisters for their cruel treatment of her and gives them homes near the palace where they all live "happily ever after." 2001, Phyllis Fogelman/Penguin Putnam. Ages 4 to 8. A MAGICAL TALE OF 'PUPPY LOVE'

Writers and artist never seem to run out of variations on the beloved Cinderella story. Certainly, youngsters do not tire of hearing it. Who doesn't love a happy ending? This latest sprightly version might be subtitled 'Puppy Love' as Cinderella is a piquant floppy-eared pup relegated to the kitchen by her ugly, overweight sisters (mutts, to say the least). Price Charming is a regal canine - tall, handsome with perky ears and a shiny licorice nose. After meeting the girl of his dreams at the ball, he knows that every dog will have his day (or princess as the case may be). Thus he searches throughout the land until the glass slipper finds a fitting paw. There's also a good lesson in generosity in this modern tale as Cinderella forgives her horrid stepsisters and even builds homes for them by the palace, where they all dwell happily ever after. Youngsters will be taken with the duck footman and rooster coachmen. In fact, they may enjoy this Cinderella so much that shiny new copies will wind up dog-eared.
