Soon to be a Lifetime movie called "Lying to be Perfect"

When Nola Devlin is turned down for her dream job because she's overweight, she decides to become thin-or, at least, pretend to be. The alter ego she creates-the thin, British, hip, and did we mention thin Belinda Apple-is a smashing success who is offered movie proposals, national television appearances and even dates...though no one's met her in person, of course.

Then Nola takes Belinda a bit too far, and is forced to join "The Cinderella Pact" and drop the pounds. As the weight comes off, however, Nola's problems begin to mount.

Library Journal
Strohmeyer's (The Secret Lives of Fortunate Wives; the "Bubbles Yablonsky" series) seventh novel is a modern Cinderella story starring a smart, funny, full-figured single woman in her thirties. Unhappy both with her weight and her low-level editorial job for celebrity magazine Sass!, Nola Devin embarks on a weight-reduction pact with her two best friends and applies for an opening at the magazine to become its new advice columnist. When her application is treated dismissively by her boss, the trim and tyrannical Lori DiGrigio, the undaunted Nola doctors an old photograph of herself and submits a fake r sum and application under the name of Belinda Apple. When Belinda is hired and becomes all the rage, the fun really begins. This contemporary fairy tale, complete with a Prince Charming, differs from the traditional primarily in that, with a little help from her friends, the lady effects her own transformation. Very enjoyable; recommended for all fiction collections.-Sheila Riley, Smithsonian Inst. Libs., Washington, DC Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Overweight and overlooked, Nola Devlin secretly recreates herself as the nation's sexiest advice columnist. When Nola learns that the tabloid where she works as an editor is looking for a hot advice columnist, she eagerly applies for the job. However, thanks to her bulging belly and frumpy clothes, she is quickly dismissed. On a whim, she resends the company her resume-this time with a new name, Belinda Apple, a London address and a sexy, mostly fake photo. Her bosses eat it up. Next thing she knows, she's churning out copy from London (wink, wink) and is the next big British sensation to hit the States. Absolutely everyone loves her wit, her charm and those cute pink cowboy boots she wears in her photo. In the meantime, back in the real world, Nola and two of her equally overweight friends have decided that it's time to curtail the cheesecake. The three enter into a pact-based on advice Belinda suggested in one of her columns-to lose weight and get healthy. As Nola struggles with her diet, she's also starting to feel crushed beneath the weight of her secret. None of her friends or family is aware of her alternative identity. And trouble is looming when she receives a note from the publisher saying that he is beginning to doubt that Belinda exists. All of a sudden, everyone, from the publisher's sexy son to Hollywood movie studios, is clamoring for a meeting with Belinda. Can Nola pull it off?Delightful frolic from the author of the Bubbles series (Bubbles Betrothed, 2005, etc.), featuring an authentic woman who can't help but dabble in a little bit of fantasy.

I also watched the Lifetime movie before reading this book and the book was by far much better. The book was definitely relatable for anyone who has tried to lose weight before. The book is also very inspiring and just makes my heart sigh. Maybe there is hope for love for women like me! Great book definitely recommend!

I loved reading a novel with a heroine who struggles with her weight and actually goes about losing it in a healthy way. Nola is someone that most women can relate to, whatever your size. She is smart and witty and finds herself in an impossible situation. I couldn't help but laugh out loud at her responses to the many "sticky" situations she found herself in. Excellent read for anyone wanting to enjoy a light read filled with humour. I look forward to reading more by Sarah Strohmeyer.

I actually saw the Lifetime movie before reading this book and liked it so much I ordered the book. I was so glad I did because I found it to be even better! Nola, Deb and Nancy go through three different and yet similar paths to achieve their goals of weight loss. Using the Cinderella pact as their support system, they each strive to overcome the obesity that has for one reason or another become a large part of their lives. They find that losing the weight doesn't make their problems disappear and even creates a few new ones. Nola's overarching story allows the reader to see and even more in depth view of this Cinderella's journey to find her prince and her happily ever after.

This is the fourth book I've read about weight being the main issue, the others are Bet Me, Good In Bed, and Jemima J. I would pass on Good In Bed; I had no empathy for the main character and it was too offbeat and tragic. Anyway, this is not quite as funny or steamy as Bet Me, but it's witty and captivating. I like how it contrasts three different methods the girl friends lose weight, what empowers them to do so, their maintenance, their pitfalls, and how they come out afterwards. Deb and Nancy's stories feel so real. Deb realizes what she wants in a marriage after hiding behind years of feeling insecure about her weight and settling because of it. Nancy takes charge of her life again in a male dominated career field. Deb and Nancy's weight loss methods are more extreme and fast, whereas Nola's probably the more popular method of slow and gradual with eating right and exercise. I enjoyed the romantic storyline but found it unrealistic, especially having only met a few times to end the way it did. Nevertheless, it was well written, pretty real and inspiring, with enough wit and romance to pull you in.

I first got hooked on this author with her Bubbles series. When I found out she wrote other books as well I had to check them out and am now adding her to my list of favorite authors. You can not go wrong when you pick a S.Strohmeyer book! Really love the idea behind this book. The transformation the main characters go through is touching. The love stories are heartwarming but also keep you guessing throughout. Highly recommended book.
