Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Sandra I. Reynertson, MD, FACC (Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine)
Description: This book is the first of its kind devoted to the circadian rhythmicity of cardiovascular disease. It is a gathering of international reputable experts in the field of circadian rhythms and their relation to the epidemiologic and pathologic aspects of cardiovascular disease.
Purpose: Because sudden cardiac death, stroke, and myocardial infarction are the leading causes of death in this country, a better understanding of the disease processes and their relation to the circadian rhythm may help provide treatment options, specifically targeted to their relationships. Each chapter of this book provides a concise but thorough review of the literature, followed by therapeutic options to prevent cardiovascular events.
Audience: This book is specifically targeted toward clinicians caring for patients with cardiovascular disorders or at an increased risk of developing them. It is also pertinent for cardiovascular researchers, providing them with a concise review of the literature and suggestions for further areas of investigation.
Features: The first four chapters of this book discuss the various triggers and modulating factors that are associated with and responsible for the circadian pattern of cardiovascular events. Subsequent chapters are devoted to the circadian patterns of specific cardiovascular disease processes. The final chapters are devoted to the pharmacologic and therapeutic approaches specifically directed to prevent cardiovascular events.
Assessment: This book is a concise, well-written review of the influence of circadian rhythms on CV events and morbidity and mortality. A better understanding by the clinician of this subject matter may ultimately improve patient care and survival.

Booknews
For clinicians, documents the predominance of myocardial infarction and ischemia and sudden death in the morning hours, and discusses some of the mechanisms that have been suggested and investigated as underlying the phenomenon. Specialist pioneers in medical chronobiology discuss the role of triggers and other modulating factors for the periodicity, survey the epidemiological and scientific evidence for it, and pathophysiological processes and potential therapeutic considerations. The CiP data shows the title as "Circadian rhythms: cardiovascular implications". Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
