PreS-Gr 2-Levenson, known for his work as a producer of such videos as Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes (Sadako y las mil grullas de papel, Scott Foresman, 1996), introduces children to the cycles of life in this translation of the 1999 English-language original. In poetic text, he presents facts about pumpkins and incorporates the descriptions into the remarkable illustrations. The words of the poem slide down a huge stack of pumpkins or form a straight column imitating pumpkin seeds in a plant. The photos are not only well integrated with the text but have a beauty of their own, showing the growth of a pumpkin plant from various perspectives, including some close-up views of pumpkin plants and flowers. Basic information on growing pumpkins is also included. The Spanish translation avoids the few awkward rhymes of the original text, making the book more poetic. The faithfully rendered video features Mexican American narrator Luis Valdez and George Winston's sparkling piano music that keeps pace with the text and lifts the spirit. Singly or together, these two paeans to pumpkins work beautifully in a classroom setting or for autumn-themed library story times.-Tim Wadham, Maricopa Cty. Lib.
