Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Halsey (Who Wakes Rooster?) invites readers to step right up under the Big Top and count from one top-hatted ringmaster to 10 brightly clad clowns. Working in cutouts, she creates a spotlight effect: animals and acrobats alike appear to be performing under bright lights, with the cutout figures casting shadows over the spectators. The background for the eight tightrope acrobats and trapeze artists is neatly shaded in curving stripes to emulate the pinnacle of the tent, lighted from below. In other spreads, Halsey represents the audience members with small ovals in colors that complement the costumes of the performers. Two waggish mice appear in each picture, waiting to be found by young readers; a closing spread enumerates the cast once more. Youngsters can count on this splashy introduction to the greatest show on earth. Ages 2-5. (Sept.) Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.

PreS-K-Colorful double-page spreads introduce circus staples from 1 enthusiastic ringmaster to 5 leaping tigers to 10 silly clowns. Two gray mice hop from page to page, offering readers the opportunity to locate their hiding places. The text merely identifies the illustrations on each page: "6 ponies/7 seals," etc. Cut-paper pictures showcased against jewel-colored backgrounds feature easily recognizable animals that are more endearing than ferocious. Pair this fun counting book with Lois Ehlert's Circus (HarperCollins, 1992) for colorful storytime fun.-Lisa Gangemi Krapp, Middle Country Public Library, Centereach, NY Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.

Meet the Author

Megan Halsey has studied printmaking and illustration, but what she really likes is making things—especially the exquisite cut-paper figures that enliven such books as Who Wakes Rooster? by Clare Hodgson Meeker, which the New Yorker selected for recommended reading, and One Bean, by Anne Rockwell, which was chosen as an Outstanding Science Trade Book for Children by the joint committee of the National Science Teachers Association and the Children's Book Council.

Megan, who also teaches illustrations at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, lives with her husband in Philadelphia.
