Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
MacDonald's crisp trademark paper collages are the main event, as she uses the sights of the circus to explore the concept of opposites. Readers kick things off by pulling a tab to let 11 clowns "out" of a tiny yellow car. They can also literally turn a clown's frown upside down, taking him from sad to happy; help a small mouse scurry out from under a big elephant; and make an empty truck full, when the circus comes to a close. The elaborate costumes and variety of interactive elements should prove kid-pleasing. Ages 37. (Aug.)

This book starts being fun on the front cover with the picture of a blue elephant in a red hat lifting a small brown mouse in a red dress into the air with the tip of its trunk. On the first page, in front of a red circus tent, a clown in an orange suit is selling colorful balloons and a yellow car full of clowns has the word "in" written on the door. Coming out of the back of the car there is a light blue hand just asking to be pulled; and when you do, a whole stream of clowns comes "out" of the car. On another page, there is a yellow tent with a "plain" brown bear riding a bicycle; but when the tent flap is raised, there is a "fancy" bear underneath riding his bicycle wearing a purple cape covered with stars and a hat of feathers. On the opposite page a "big" elephant stands on a platform and a "small" mouse can be pulled out of it with a pull-tab. Other surprising and entertaining movable actions are on every page, and all of them illustrate opposites: short/tall, happy/sad, quiet/noisy, plain/fancy, dry/wet. There are pull-tabs, lift-the-flaps and a wheel, and each is different. One flap lifts an entire page, another just a corner, yet another triples in size as it is raised. One simply turns upside down. All colors are bright and cheerful with no shading or unnecessary details. See a happy clown become sad with just a twist of his lips. The author/illustrator is a Caldecott honoree. Children will love it! Reviewer: Eleanor Heldrich

PreS-K—"In" and "out," "plain" and "fancy," "empty" and "full" are just a few of the opposites featured in this romp through the big top. MacDonald's artwork is brightly colored with crisp contrasts and clean lines. The images, created using cut-paper collages, are matched with two contrary phrases. Each spread can be manipulated in some way (flaps, pull tabs, wheels, foldouts) to demonstrate the concept. The simple presentation and well-designed paper-engineered components are sure to encourage interaction. Clever techniques include a rotating mouth to make a "happy" clown "sad," and a turning wheel makes it appear that the balls a monkey is juggling go "up" and "down." This engaging book will leave youngsters satisfied, yet wanting more.—Laura Butler, Mount Laurel Library, NJ
