Meet the Author

Eric Rivard is a professional services manager for CDW overseeing an industry expert team of consultants who implement advanced Cisco, Microsoft, data center, virtualization, and storage solutions to enterprise customers. Over the years, he has taught professionals in both academic and industry settings on topics of SCADA, Windows, networking, and IT security. Eric has 15 years of experience in the IT industry, ranging from a network administrator to senior Cisco engineer to IT director. Eric is also a professor at National University, teaching networking and IT classes. He is the author of the first, second, and third editions of the CCNA Flash Card Practice Pack.

He holds a B.S. in information technology from the University of Phoenix and a master’s in business management from Redlands University. Eric also volunteers serving the young men ages 12 through 18 in his church. Eric is an Eagle Scout and currently works with the Boy Scouts in his area. He lives with his wife and five children in Oceanside, California.

    Are you looking to advance your career through achieving Cisco CCNA certification? If you are, then this book is for you! Author Eric Rivard, has done an outstanding job of writing a book which serves as the final preparation tool for the CCNA exam, via flash cards.

    Author Rivard, begins with a review of the foundational functions of networking, including the OSI model and the TCP/IP model. Then, the author provides an overview of LAN technologies; as well as, Cisco IOS features, enhanced IOS editing commands, and basic Cisco router and switch configuration. He continues by covering the fundamentals of Ethernet technologies and describes how switches operate. Then, the author focuses on IPv4 addresses. He then covers the most basic terminology of routing and introduces you to the basics of static routing and configuring a Cisco router with basic IP information. Next, the author breaks down access lists and covers the required access control list topics that you will see on the ICND exam. The author continues by providing an overview on how to connect to the Internet for a small business. Then, he covers the fundamentals for securing Cisco network devices. Next, the author shows you the basics of VLANs and describes how to configure VLANs and trunk links on a Cisco Catalyst 2960 Series switch. He also introduces you to dynamic routing protocols and the concepts behind how they function. The author continues by providing an overview of VLANs and Dynamic Trunking Protocol. Then, he covers the topics on the exam for Spanning Tree and RSTP and other high-available technologies such a EtherChannel and gateway redundancy using HSRP and GLBP. The author then, shows you some basic troubleshooting steps and tools, and provides common scenarios found while troubleshooting switched and routed IPv4 and IPv6 networks. Next, he provides flash cards that cover EIGRP concepts, configuring EIGRP, configuring EIGRP IPv6, and troubleshooting EIGRP. The author continues by covering the concepts of multiarea OSPF and describes how to configure multiarea OSPFv2 and OSPFv3. Then, he provides an overview of the different types of WAN connections, WAN terminology, and encapsulation. Next, the author quizzes you on the different terminology of Frame Relay and describes how to enable Frame Relay encapsulation on a Cisco router. The author continues by covering the basic topics of VPN solutions that you will find on the INCD2 exam. Finally, he shows you how to manage a Cisco network.

    The flash cards in this excellent book work best when used in conjunction with the official study aids for the CCNA exam. In fact, the flash cards in this great book might also be useful to you as a quick desk- or field-reference guide.
