Chapter 1: Troubleshooting Methodology

Today, the complexity ofinternetworks is growing, and multiprotocol environments are presenting more problems. Internetwork troubleshooting has become an important issue to many organizations. There are crucial reasons a systematic approach is necessary to resolve internetworking problems. This chapter gives you a standard problem-solving model that will help you begin troubleshooting.

This chapter is the core around which this book is built. Effective and efficient growth of troubleshooting expertise can only result from a systematic and logical approach.

Whenever you approach a network problem, you should use a problem-solving modela logical step-by-step method of eliminating the causes.

It is also important to document the network and relevant devices and configurations before and after making changes. Understanding and documenting your network reduces the time required to troubleshoot problems that arise.

After reading this chapter, you will be able to:

  • Use a problem-solving model, which will be useful for systematically troubleshooting problems.

  • Outline the steps you took to isolate potential causes of problems and the steps you took to determine possible solutions.

Using a Systematic Troubleshooting Method

The costs of an internetwork failure can be disastrous. Generally, the average cost of a production network disability-using lost productivity due to loss of host or client/server access as the basis of the calculation-can range from tens of thousands of dollars to several million dollars per hour. For a growing number of organizations, an extended production network outage can cause the end of the organization.

Restoring an internetwork that has failed or has become impaired puts incredible pressure on network engineers and network administrators. Given this pressure, use of special expertise and known shortcuts to rapidly restore network functionality is valuable. If you know how to solve a production network problem directly, do so. Use your expertise.

However, this expertise requires a technical depth and a detailed breadth of knowledge about the internetwork. Not often does this depth and breadth result from isolated, scattered, and unsystematic troubleshooting.

Unless you already know how to solve a problem, an unsystematic approach to troubleshooting can result in wasting time lost in the network's maze of symptoms, interdependencies, and contingencies. A systematic troubleshooting method, on the other hand, can help you understand the network's maze of details by going through a process that can help you identify facts, consider possibilities, act on likely causes, and observe the results of your testing.

The general idea of a troubleshooting model is to systematically reduce a large set of possible causes of trouble to a small set of causes or a single cause. Then you can fix the problem and restore network function. After the problem is resolved, a systematic troubleshooting method of documenting the case helps to capture, preserve, and communicate the experience gained while solving the problem.

The use of such a systematic troubleshooting model increases the expertise of the organization and reduces the time to solve similar, future problems. This evolution of improving expertise and collaboration can help mitigate the pressures of supporting crucial, complex internetworks.

The Complexity of Internetworks

As more advanced technologies and services are introduced into the fields of information processing and communications, the tasks of designing, managing, and maintaining the resulting internetworks are becoming increasingly complex.

Historically, network architectures were host-centric. Mainframe-based architectures have evolved to distributed processing systems with an emergence of the client/server paradigm. New applications such as CAD/CAM, video, audio, and multimedia, are gaining popularity and are feasible due to the increase in processor power on clients and servers. The result has been users that need high-speed links such as dedicated 10-Mbps Ethernet, 100-Mbps Ethernet 100-Mbps FDDI, or greater to the desktop. To accommodate the transport of the increased load: carriers are implementing services such as ISDN, Frame Relay, and ATM. As shown in Figure 1-1, different networks require different designs and different levels of complexity.

The variety of proprietary protocols adds complexity to the internetwork. A goal of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Open System Interconnection (OSI) reference model (see Figure 1-2) is to provide compatibility and operability between different vendors' systems, theoretically providing a common architecture and removing intercommunication problems. Although many vendors model their protocol structures on the seven-layer OSI model, attaining a seamless interrelationship between all vendors' products is far from a reality.

As a result of these factors, today's internetworks are complex. Internetworks have become a mixture of protocols, technologies, media, and topologies. With this added complexity comes the potential for difficult connectivity and performance problems. Difficult problems require a systematic problem-solving model.

In this chapter we'll examine how a problem-solving model can be the most effective way to reduce the time required to troubleshoot the network.

The Problem-Solving Model

The complexity and crucial uptime requirements of modem networks intensify the pressures to solve connectivity and performance problems. The best way to approach an internetworking problem is to develop a standard troubleshooting methodology. The problem-solving model presented in Figure 1-3 is one example of such a methodology. Using an ordered pattern Of thought when troubleshooting helps you solve any problems you encounter. It also helps you and your organization improve overall expertise as your organization supports its internetwork.

Figure 1-3 shows a sequence of steps. These steps can be grouped into a small number of troubleshooting phases:

  • Make sure you have a clear, sufficient definition of the problem.
  • Gather all the relevant facts and consider the likely possibilities.
  • Create and implement an action plan for the most likely possibility, and then observe the results.
  • If the symptoms do not stop, try another action plan (or gather additional facts).
  • If the symptoms do stop, document how you resolved the problem.

NOTE  This problem-solving model is one of many such models you can use. If you are already using another model (based on an alternative model or learned through experience), you should continue to use it. If in your past experience you have not approached problems systematically and not considered using a problem-solving model, you should adopt a scheme such as the one outlined in this chapter.

The goal of this chapter is to establish a methodical mindset--an ordered pattern of thought to use when troubleshooting. The model described in this chapter takes a multistep approach to problem-solving. This is all you're probably going to need to pass the test. No thorough coverage of routing protocols however...

This group is the starting foundation to understanding the equipment and the networking theories behind them. You will not only learn the equipment in depth, but networking concepts that apply to all vendors. If you intend to reach CCNP or CCDP this is the start and then follow with the CCNP Certification library. As with anything else, lab time is a must!

I recommend these titles because Cisco is adminstering the exam, they know best about there own equipment, and they are the most comprehensive. The software is also very educational.

If your going to take the route of Self Study and are looking for books to pass the test, then this should be your only choice. These books are incredible detailed, very precise, and surpisingly easy to read through (you don't get lost as easy as you do with other books on this subject). You also have the added bonus of a Case Study at the end of each chapter that runs you through a real life scenario using what you just learned, and how to handle it.
