    Logically structured and straight forward:

CCNP 3: Multilayer Switching Companion Guide Reviewer: Glenn Bradley, Senior Network Engineer Rating: 4 out of 5 Logically structured and straight forward: I did not review the first edition of this book so this is an ¿as is¿ review. I assume the fact that a second edition was warranted means corrections were made and updated technologies were added. That being said, let¿s take a look at the material. New CCNA¿s be counseled I feel the step between a CCNA and a CCNP is broader than the step from CCNP to CCIE (R&S). By this I mean that the CCNA takes a shallow dip into a broad range of disciplines while the CCNP delves much deeper and more specifically into four areas. The CCIE takes things to a whole different level but let¿s stay focused. The chapters are logically laid out but not in the usual order one comes to expect. The authors however used this approach well. I actually found their information track refreshing and it stimulated my interest in the material. The inevitable OSI stack discussion was well done. Multicasting received a good bit of attention but was a little spread out through the book. Good diagrams and figures / photos are plentiful but not overused. Cisco must be reading the reviews written by us `private sector¿ folks as this book is wonderfully free of the spelling, figure reference and diagram label errors we so often find distressing. The target audience would be experienced individuals functioning comfortably at the CCNA level. The way the book is laid out, people at this level will be familiar with or have heard of the technologies but challenged by the depth of the material. Other study would of course be required for the other disciplines involved in achieving the CCNP certification. I previously reviewed CCNP 3: Multilayer Switching Lab Companion which may seem backwards since it is the practical accompaniment to this text. The important thing is that the two books work very well together and I would strongly recommend using them together. This will provide you a greater depth of understanding of the material than simply cramming to pass a test. The extra few bucks will be worth it down the line. In summation: I found the text very readable, the diagrams and figures useful in clarifying a point and not several pages away from the text referring to them as I¿ve sometimes seen. The lack of the familiar ¿Do I Know This Already¿ format is not missed as the depth of the material per chapter would be difficult to measure with 10 ¿ 20 questions. I give the book 4 out of 5.
