Cisco QoS Exam Certification Guide (ISBN: 1587201240) by Wendell Odom and Michael J. Cavanaugh is a good book for anyone who needs a reference guide for QoS . The first thing that I noticed about this book is that the format is completely different from any other Cisco Press book I have read. This includes the diagrams and topologies, as well as the text formatting. I found that the new format made the book a little difficult to follow but that might just be due to my familiarity with the previous format. What I found the most useful was the configurations that were presented. They allowed me to see what the exact configurations looked like for specific QoS methods. This came in very handy when it came time to plan an implementation. This alone makes this book a must have for the reference library. The reader is going to need to make sure that they have a good grasp of networking basics in order to understand a lot of the concepts presented. The book does not spend that much time providing background on basic networking concepts. This title is designed to be a self-study certification guide for the Cisco 642-642 QoS exam. Each chapter of the book covers specific exam topics. In the beginning of each chapter there is a ¿Do I know this already¿ quiz. This enables the reader to gauge their existing knowledge to know whether or not they need to study the section. There are questions at the end of each chapter to access what the reader has learned and to reinforce key topics. A CD-ROM is included with the book. This CD-ROM contains both an electronic version of the book as well as a testing engine that can be used to prepare for the certification exam. The testing engine allows the user to take a timed exam and access what areas they are strong and weak in. This will allow users to validate their knowledge in the concepts and techniques that were presented in the book. The final chapter in the book covers Cisco¿s recommended best practices. I found this book the most informational because it illustrated the recommended way to tie all of the QoS technologies together. After all, most networks will have more than one type of QoS implemented. The one thing that I thought this book was missing was some type of practice labs. It is after all a ¿self study¿ book. The user could try to perform some of the examples that are presented in the book. It would have been nice to see some well put together labs that really drive home the configuration and functionality of each QoS method. Overall, I would have to say that this is a good book for those looking to learn more about QoS technologies. As long as you have a good networking foundation you will learn a lot from this book.

I want to refresh my knowledge around the QoS and though that reading the new material for the Qos 642-642 Official Certification Guide will help me refresh all the knowledge gain when I got my CCVP certification. The Cisco certification guide is a very good material that has being evolving through the years and when I compare the initial official certification guides to the new ones a lot of effort and good material is compiled on this books. At my first quick review of the book where I read the index and browse some of the interesting topics that my eye catch. I found the material very easy to read because the material goes straight to the point and this is very simple when I was reviewing the complete material which includes the QoS fundamentals, components, modular QoS CLI and Auto QoS, classification and Making, Congestion Management, Congestion Avoidance, Traffic Policing and Shaping, link Efficiency Mechanisms and QoS Best Practices. The way the book is build allows you to understand how QoS works and implemented. This book also is a very good guide for the daily job, which will allow you to understand the concepts and the use it on a design, implementation and troubleshot scenarios. Easily I was able to remember concepts that I have not use for sometime but also found simple answers to specific topics that when I went through my certification exam were a little confusing and hard to understand. If you have some basic and practical knowledge around QoS this book will allow you to start linking the dots for your daily work and your certification exam and to improve your practical knowledge around Quality of Service. From the first page the book focus on real information needed for the certification exam and how to use in on your daily work for Quality of Services solutions. The book is very well organized since it is divided in 10 chapters which cover all the concepts of Quality of Service. Each chapter starts with an initial quiz which allows you to test your knowledge on topics of the chapter also there is a brief description of the topics the chapter covers. Another great feature of the book is the resume of the chapter that help you summarize the main point you need to remember from each chapter, it has specific information you will need for work, and certification exam. The authors of this book Wendell Odom and Michael J. Cavanaugh wrote a real world guide for the field and the certification exam. One more thing that I need to outline of the book is the real world example it uses to explain the different concepts of the Quality of Service. In addition the book also includes how Quality of Service is used for video, a very important theme that will start having relevance and now when you join voice and video the dots start to connect to the concepts. On every chapter the resume of each chapter help you to consolidate the knowledge of the chapter and have a reference of the most important topics on the chapter and for that specific topic to be use on the work and for the certification. It is a book that builds knowledge with the content you will see that the 10 chapters it contains cover the complete material for your certification exam and applies it to real world scenarios. I cannot stop reiterating that this book is a mandatory field guide for any person that is working on the IT industry delivering any project, service or anything that relates to it, even to your daily life.
