Editorial Reviews

Plenty Magazine - Bill McKibben

"...[E]ngaging genial, shrewd...he was willing to contemplate ideas about the relationship between people and land that few American leaders have ever entertained."
University Research Professor Emeritus at Harvard University - Edward O. Wilson

"This marvelous and patriotic book could have been written only by Bruce Babbitt. It is environmental history in a critical time written by one of the best of our history makers."
Frank Gehry

"We feel so helpless in the face of the reality of dwindling resources. Bruce Babbitt's book shows a path to empower us."
President Bill Clinton

"Bruce Babbitt was a major architect of environmental policy throughout the eight years of my administration. In Cities in the Wilderness, he is building upon that legacy with a visionary program for a national land use policy."

A Timely Plan for Better Land-Use Policy in America

In this book, former Sec. of the Interior Bruce Babbitt summarizes the effects, (both good and bad), of our current and historical land use policies and gives suggestions for policy changes that could improve the balance between increasing population, resource use, and urban sprawl with the fragility of different at-risk ecosystems, the needs of endangered species, and the beauty of our natural landscapes.
"Cities in the Wilderness" makes these concepts accessible to everyone, and it is a fairly fast, enjoyable read. If I have anything negative to say about the book, it's that there wasn't enough of it. For each point that Babbitt made, he could have included several more examples. If the book had been three times as long, it would have been more thorough, and not a bit less enjoyable or engaging.
