Meet the Author

TED Speaker Omar Ahmad was the Mayor of San Carlos, California; a lover of
fine cigars; a spinner of great yarns who honed his craft annually at the National
Storytelling Festival; a Silicon Valley Entrepreneur with endless ideas; a passionate
aviator who dreamt of owning his own plane; a mountain climber; a faithful Florida
Gator; a cowboy boot aficionado; a leader; a visionary; and a friend.
The American-born son of immigrant parents from Pakistan, Ahmad was
less than halfway through his term as San Carlos’ Mayor when he died in May 2011.
Ahmad was the first Muslim Mayor in California. However, he was outspoken in
his belief that neither issues nor people should ever be categorized as “Muslim”
or “non-Muslim.” The people of San Carlos were simply his neighbors, and he told
his neighbors that “there is no Muslim way to fill a pothole.” An active citizen,
Ahmad believed, simply saw problems and worked to fix them.
