Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Susie Wilde
Meanwhile, back in the states The City by the Bay: A Magical Journey Around San Francisco is a book that will appeal to many children. Historical notes begin this book and fun facts end it. In between are sandwiched highlights of eight kid-magic tourist sites. The writing is clear and engaging and is an excellent representation of the city's diversity. Illustrations are by Elisa Kleven, a woman who is well known for her dedication to colorful folk art and multicultural representation. Her detailing of the whirl of color and excitement that is a great symbol of San Francisco will capture kids.
Kathryn Broderick
Appropriately subtitled, this picture book and travel guide irresistibly introduces the grand city of San Francisco. It opens with a time line of the city's history, continues with double-page spreads covering various highlights of the city, and ends with a conglomeration of fun facts, a sampling of foreign words and phrases one might hear in the city, and addresses and phone numbers of other places to visit. Each short chapter boasts a large, colorful, whimsical collage illustration by Kleven (in each appears a dog, a cat, and a baby) and a few paragraphs about, in order of appearance, Chinatown, the Japanese Tea Garden, the cable cars and Lombard Street, the Golden Gate Bridge, Mission Dolores, North Beach and Coit Tower, the Palace of Fine Arts, and Union Square. As a whole, this very positive look at city life is informative, well designed, and a pleasure to read and explore. Proceeds from the sale of this book will benefit the Junior League of San Francisco and will help support charitable community projects throughout the Bay Area. For a look at another city, see Jakobsen's "My New York", also reviewed in this issue.
