The third book in the Rain Wilds Chronicles is a leisurely journey to nowhere, but its well-drawn characters and intriguing setting make it worth the trip. Set, as are many of fantasy maven Hobb's (Dragon Haven, 2010, etc.) novels, in the Realm of the Elderlings, the story picks up as a group of dragons and their human keepers are settling in near the ancient city of Kelsingra. Once inhabited by dragons and Elderlings, a race of humans transformed to be dragon companions, Kelsingra lies dormant, waiting to be rediscovered by the fledgling dragons, who are still learning to fly. The keepers deal with a range of interpersonal dramas, while down the river from Kelsingra, various factions conspire to exploit the dragons and their ancestral home for financial and political gain. Hobb takes time to explore numerous characters in her sprawling cast, and thus the plot moves at a very slow pace, even though there are several important discoveries. Anyone hoping for resolution or significant advancement from the story will be disappointed, but Hobb tempers that frustration by delving deeply into her characters' lives, using the rigid customs of the fantasy world to explore universal ideas about social pressures and romantic longing. The author is especially adept at examining the roles of women, whether through nervous teenage dragon-keeper Thymara's trying to balance two jealous suitors or Elderling Malta's struggles to bring a child to term. Their dilemmas are specific to the world of the novel, but the real-life resonance gives the story extra depth. The resurgence of the dragon species is vital, but no more so than men and women figuring out how to relate to one another. By the end, little has changed and few answers have been found, but the time spent with the characters never seems like a waste. Bring on the next installment.

Robin Hobb

Robin Hobb was born in California but grew up in Alaska, where she learned to love the forest and the wilderness. She has lived most of her life in the Pacific Northwest and currently resides in Tacoma, Washington. She is the author of the Rain Wilds Chronicles, the Farseer Trilogy, the Liveship Traders Trilogy, and the Tawny Man Trilogy. Her books under the pseudonym Megan Lindholm include Wizard of the Pigeons, The Windsingers, and Cloven Hooves. She is also the author of The Inheritance, a collection of stories written under both names. Her short fiction has won the Asimov’s Readers’ Award and been a finalist for both the Nebula and Hugo awards.

    Worst Ending Ever

    I've read every trilogy that Robin Hobb has written and loved them all until now. This trilogy has no conclusion. It ends as though her deadline came and she just turned in what she had written at the time ... very disappointing

    Too short.

    Hobb is known for long sprawling fantasy. The writing style is the same that i have come to know and love, but when i buy a hobb book i expect at least five to six hundred pages of fantastic adventure. There is obviously more she has to say about the charaters, so why not include that in this book instead of having the ending of this book feel so incomplete. I feel like i am being ripped off by this "chronicle" when the first three books could have been condensed into one or two of a trilogy like hobbs books normally are. I feel as if hobb or her publishers are taking advantage of me and causing me to pay substantially more for less product.

    No end in sight

    Unlike her other series, volume 3 doesn't wrap up the plot lines. I could sum up this book in 2 sentences. I love the characters and her writing style, but for the money, I would advise reading the synopsis and waiting for the final installment.

    Disappointing

    I love Robin Hobb, great stories, great characterization, beautiful world... however this book really upset me! We have spent 2 books getting characters to Kelsingra and now that the main characters are there we branch out and bring more people in to the story! The last chapter was introducing new characters even. There was barely any forward motion at all in this book and a lot of sexual discovery and new partners. Fine, put that in there to develop the characters but don't spend one third of the book doing it. Especially about characters we don't care about. Hobb needs a better editor to cut her viewpoints down and get rid of all the chaf (sp?).

    Overall the entire book felt like an introduction, or maybe the first book of a series. Unfortunately its the third book, and I paid 27 dollars for something another book and feel like Hobb has started to milk her audience for money. The 3 books really only have enough story to be a single novel and that's how I feel about that!

    -still love Hobb, not loving Rain Wild Series

    thaawsome!

    My only complaint is the book doesn't ever feel done at the end. It is almost like the books following are till about the same people. Just wonder why split them at all or else wind it all up so it feels like a closed chapter at at the end give some completion or book two might as well have the same title and say continuing saga....
    Otherwise. Wow loved the story the trials adventures romances great heros and villans and a woman who grows a real strong characture during the trip
    Also cool species and and I love the selfish dragon route. Please keep em coming.

    Highly Recommend

    As usual, Robin Hobb's writing is excellent. I only wish that the book had been longer. I am so excited for the next book in the series. I feel that she did a great job developing the story line.

    City of Dragons RW#3

    I enjoyed this series very much. This third book, however, could have been a lot better. It seemed like it was a halfhearted attempt to complete the series. I think there must be a fourth book in progress or the author has left us in limbo on many fronts.

    Not a trillogy this time

    Like other readers here I expected this to be the final book of a trillogy, which it cannot be as it concludes nothing. Other than that dissapointment I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I've read her live ship series and the rain wilds books before this one. I like her plots and characters.
