Georgia has issues with her stepbrother, Russell. Sometimes he is so nasty she just wants to get away. When she purchases a winged horse from an old shopkeeper, Georgia finds herself farther away than she dreamed possible. She is transported four hundred years into the past. The horse is a talisman that allows her to "stravagate"—to travel back and forth through time and space. In Remora, Georgia is astounded to come upon a real winged horse, and equally astounded to find Lucien, a boy from her school who has died in her world, yet lives healthily and happily in Talia. Georgia quickly becomes embroiled in intrigue, politics, and romance in her new, fascinating world. She helps a handicapped boy from a privileged family permanently stravagate to London so that he can get the medical help he needs. The catch is that his Remoran body must die for his London body to live. A host of characters inhabit this imaginative if predictable tale. Georgia, a 15-year-old with a hateful older stepbrother, finds herself transported to 16th-century Talia (Italy), when she goes to sleep holding a little winged horse figure she bought in an antique shop. She awakes in a barn where a coveted, rare winged horse has just been born. She quickly finds herself involved in the intrigues and conflicts between rival families and the preparation for the Stellata, the annual horse race among the competitive elite families. The di Chimici family is seeking to extend its power and control and sees the race as another step in reaching that goal. At the same time, its patriarch is devastated by an accident that left his youngest son, Falco, crippled. When Falco, dismayed at his now limited future, meets Georgia and learns that she can travel across time and place, he resolves to stravagate permanently to her time, where modern medicine may be able to give him a normal life. Georgia eventually helps him to get to England, but his transition to life there seems somewhat contrived and too neatly resolved. The book climaxes with the horse race and Falco's death in his own time when he becomes a modern-day boy. The concept of stravagation is appealing and is used well to create an adventure tale that takes readers back into the 16th century with all its drama. This second exploration of the dimension of the "stravagantes" sets their wider political intrigues in a more intimate personal context. London teen Georgia affects a punk bravado in the face of unpopularity, an abusive stepbrother, and the recent death of Lucien, her secret crush. But Lucien has actually "stravagated" to a fantastic parallel Renaissance Italy; Georgia discovers she shares this power, landing in Remora (an analog of our Siena), and allying herself to one of the factions in the city's annual horse race. She also finds Lucien neck-deep in the maneuverings linking the race to the struggle against the powerful Chemici (i.e., Medici) clan. Toss in a handsome jockey, a crippled Chemici prince, espionage, political betrothals, kidnapping, and a miraculous winged horse, and there is almost too much plot; but Hoffman keeps a tight control on the various conflicts as they climax spectacularly at the race. The background is so rich with fascinating tidbits that the characters can nearly become lost, but Georgia remains appealing, realistically flawed yet likable and determined.     A great 2nd book in the series

    This is an excellent book that I recommend to anyone who wants a good book to read in the summer. I couldn't stop reading it. This is an exceptually good read that draws the unsupecting reader into its fantasy world, interesting characters, and stories of flying horses. It is no wonder why Mary Hoffman chose to add a second book to her Stravaganza series.

    Different

    Ok, let me just say that I loved City of Masks. I thought that the writing could've been a little better, but it was still a good book. When I went and bought this copy however, I was confused. Because this story is about a horse and horse race, it really only appeals to a certain group of people. Also, in this book you knew nothing, however the character did and this made it hard to follow. When I read the first book, the character knew nothing either, so you could learn in this book. If you ask me, skip this book and go straight to city of flowers.

    Only four in comparison to City of Masks

    Great book, don't get me wrong. But I expected more from the winged horse. Even though it's on the cover, the star of it all, the horse only appears to me as a vague character weaved into the tale to save the day, nothing more. Then it's hooray, hooray, the horse has finally made a real appearance and then the book ends. I did like the new stravagante, though, but hoped that the story would focus a little more on Lucien rather than the new character. I know I shouldn't include the cover in my rating, but I think the cover is awesome. It's what attracted me over to that section of the library.

    I wish Talia was real!!!!

    I absolutly love this book, It drew me in so fast as well as the first book. Hoffman writes so vividly about Talia and the stravaganti you can't help but get drawn in the story and wonder about what will happen next. I can't wait to start the third book. And i really wish there was more books in the series. In my opinion, way better than Harry Potter by a long shot.

    I actually read this book before the first book in the series. Your heart really goes out for Georgia, but what is really exceptional about her is that she is not just another "lucky" heroine--she is an active participant in shaping her own fate, despite the circumstances, and that makes her a truly likable heroine. She and Lucien are probably my two favorite characters in the entire series. This book really does work as a stand-alone novel--I had no idea this was part of a series until long after I had finished City of Stars. The story really draws you in, and you will never be able to indifferently walk past an antiques' shop ever again. Overall, this is truly a great read.

    Great Book

    This was a great book, very suspenseful. But it was very hard to keep track of all the people in the di Chimici family and all the clans like the Ram, the Lady, the twins and places... like Bellezza, Remora, Giglia and the alliances and enmities. Anyway, it actually had a good ending.

    A Fantasy Lovers Dream!

    I loved this book and I didn't even read the 1st book! I am a big Fan of 'His Dark Materials' trilogy so when I read this book I totaly loved it! I never wanted to put it down! This is a great book!

    awesome book

    ok well i read the first book because it took place in a venice-like place and i like books that take place in venice or somewhere like it and that book was good but this one was just so much better...even though the first one was good...i also like italy anyways... i believe these books are not just for 10-12 year olds..this could be good for teens too ..cause i am one..so i know...so now i want these books to become movies because they r so good and they deserve to be noticed!!!

    Wonderful!

    Mary Hoffman continues with a wonderful adventure, starting off a little boring but quickly improving into an outstanding adventure that is every bit as great (or even better) than the first one. Highly Reccomended!

    AWSOME BOOK!!

    The book was a perfect sequal to the first Stravaganza book. It had great characters, a well thought out setting and an amazing plot line. If you're into fantasy, or are just looking for something outside the box, this book is for you!!
