    the future is upon us

    I was introduced to Dr. Noguera¿s concept of education at one of his insightful and meaningful presentations at my University, Northern Kentucky University. At this presentation Dr. Noguera talked about and expressed his faith in the public school system of the United States and how it is that faith that pushes him to look at the ways the educational system can be better, and minority youth can be proud to have attended a public school. He talked about the commitment that minority groups, families and the communities that they reside in have to the children, to ensure that there matriculation in public schools is fruitful and prepares them for the future ahead of them, and how Racial Inequality in the public school system had to be dealt with. These are the memories that I took away from that presentation and the concepts and thoughts that are repeated for reader¿s pleasure. Dr. Noguera¿s analysis and breaking of new concepts for the 21st century come across as being well thought out and meant to provoke critical thinking across the boards of individuals. The book is straightforward and easy to comprehend for the reader. Dr. Noguera packs a wealth of knowledge and strategizing in 159 pages. The reader is encouraged to take Noguera¿s plan and make it their plan as to ensure that their youth or youth in their communities get the education that is to be afforded them. With the first chapter, Dr. Noguera points out the crisis¿ that are effecting the effective matriculation of students in public schools. Pointing out that, the inconsistencies in the educational system mirrored the phenomena of white flight, meaning that when Middle class White America left for the suburbs, so did the educational monies. Noguera states, ¿extreme disparities in wealth¿ are the major reason that so many urban schools fail¿ , and how the ¿No Child Left Behind Act¿ was not doing its job, but that it was leaving more children, minority children being the majority of those students falling behind. He asks pointed, relevant questions of the educators, administrators, and legislators who have gone out of there way to leave minority children behind, taking aim at preventing the problems to grow and become status quo. Dr. Noguera points out the many possibilities that there can be, for the educational system of the future, both positive and negative. He doesn¿t sugar coat the bad and he doesn¿t push his agenda on you, but better yet he devises plans that can be inter-changeable with some of the positive aspects of today¿s educational system. Dr. Noguera¿s overall focus is on the youth, he sees the youth as the roots of a big tree that is longing for life, but fighting to live. He tackles the problems head on, never side-stepping to appease a few, but he searches for the cure for all students to have a better public education, and this is the feeling that I left with after reading this book.

    Excellent blueprint for critical change in NYC

    Dr. Pedro Noguera's work 'City Schools and the American Dream' is an excellent analysis and blueprint for reforming the publlic schools systems. Dr. Pedro Noguera was the Judith K. Dimon Professor of Communities and Schools at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and has long been recognized as an important voice for educational reform. Dr Noguera's work 'City Schools' is an important guide in a long walk to reform our public schools.
