Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 3-6-- A series entry that adds to the wealth of material available on the nation's capital. As she did in City! San Francisco and City! New York (both Macmillan, 1990), Climo presents a brief history of Washington and its buildings and monuments. Her text is not very detailed but is enhanced with a number of vignettes that add interest and humor. There is a bit of information on the present city and its government and a thumbnail sketch of the sights visitors might wish to see. The book includes a serviceable index, quick facts, and several maps. There are a few minor errors: not all the books sent to the Library of Congress for copyright are kept in the collections, and the National Cathedral is basically an Episcopal church. Quibbles aside, this is a better basic introduction for younger readers than Kent's Washington, D. C. (Childrens, 1990). There are numerous full-color photographs; although they are small and reminiscent of those found in postcard packets, they extend the text both visually and with their captions. --Margaret C. Howell, West Springfield Elementary School, VA
