Booknews
Worrall (criminal justice, California State U., San Bernardino) discusses the relationship between innovations in policing and the increase in lawsuits and complaints against the police, or police- directed-grievances (PDGs). Based upon a nationwide survey of 1,400 municipal police chiefs and county sheriffs, Worrall has found that certain types of policing innovations were associated with an increase in PDGs. His analysis includes community-oriented policing, citizen complaint review procedures, police paramilitary units, and civil asset forfeiture. Raw data from the survey is presented in the appendices.
