Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Shirley Nelson
This small volume is packed with biographical information about six people who were influential during the Civil War. Not only are their contributions discussed, but relationships among them are highlighted. The book begins with Abraham Lincoln and a short description of his childhood and a longer discussion of his presidency and his leadership during the Civil War. Short bios of the two great generals Robert E. Lee and George McClellan give insight into the actual battles. The life of Frederick Douglass shows the work of the Underground Railroad. Clara Barton is shown as a leader in women's rights and education as well as the founder of the American Red Cross. The importance of Matthew Brady's photographs in documenting the war is clearly presented. In fact, Lincoln attributed his successful presidential campaign to his photograph by Brady. Photos, documents, and boxes of extra information add to the informative quality of this enjoyable look at an important time in American history. Reviewer: Shirley Nelson
School Library Journal
Gr 46—With its short sentences, chapter divisions, and colorful layouts, this book will attract young readers. Rosenberg describes six major players who "definitely…had a hand in the outcome" of the Civil War: Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, Clara Barton, George McClellan, Robert E. Lee, and Mathew Brady. The short biographies relate facts about each person's childhood, major accomplishments, and importance to the others, and how the conflict would have turned out differently without them. The text is supplemented with numerous historical photographs and sidebars. Social studies teachers could use this book as a platform for discussion about the Civil War.—Patricia Ann Owens, Illinois Eastern Community Colleges
