Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Lucent Books "World History" series is designed to provide middle school through high school readers exposure to some of the most important and compelling events in recorded history. In James A. Corrick's The Civil War readers are given an overview of perhaps the most compelling portion of American history. While it is certainly open to debate as to what events have exerted the greatest influence upon American history, it is unlikely that any set of happenings could have been more significant than the Civil War. Between 1861 and 1865 the Union was shattered and reborn, Americans waged brutal war upon one another, cities were razed, slavery ended, and the stage was set for the United States to become a major industrial and world power. All of these results flowed out of the crucible of the Civil War. In this illustrated history of that conflict, the author does a solid job of condensing the key battles, campaigns, personalities, and political evolutions of that complex struggle. Combining a rapidly paced text with numerous quotations from primary and secondary sources, James Corrick presents his readers with a sound work of history. Readers will come away from Mr. Corrick's global history of the Civil War with a sound introduction to a conflict that cost over 600,000 lives and set the stage for the rest of American history. 2003, Lucent Books, Ages 10 up.
— Greg M. Romaneck
