Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
For teachers looking for unusual material to supplement a Civil War unit, this book would be an excellent addition. The South financed and built a submarine. It did set out from the Charleston Harbor to sink one of the wooden ships blockading the harbor. The assault was a success, but the submarine never returned. Jerome provides plenty of information about the earlier unsuccessful trials, the selection and training of the crew, and the final unraveling of the mystery as to the fate of the vessel and its crew. Adult readers may be fascinated by the fifteen-year search that author Clive Cussler spearheaded and his success in locating and raising the sub. While all the answers are not known, there does seem to be some evidence that the crew just ran out of air and died peacefully. Sofo's watercolor illustrations fill every page and reveal what that sub looked like and how people dressed during this period; illustrations then move easily into the recent discoveries and continuing investigations. It is a book that would also be appropriate for kids not reading on grade level or adults just learning to read English. The book is part of the "All Aboard Reading" series, Station Stop 3 for kids reading alone. 2002, Grosset and Dunlap,
— Marilyn Courtot
School Library Journal
Gr 3-4-Readers will be immediately engaged with the first lines of this account of the raising of the Hunley on August 8, 2000, and are told that a mystery is about to be solved. Then, step-by-step they are taken back in time to a short discussion of the Civil War, the role of naval blockades, and the dream of James McClintock and Baxter Watson to create an underwater battleship to keep the Southern ports free of Northern ships. The idea did not come quickly to fruition and all of the many difficulties and disappointments are included. The chapters are short but packed with information and, while this is part of an early reading series, there is no sense that the information is simplified. The illustrations, while not compelling, do highlight the drama of the story, showing men swimming away from a sinking ship, fires raging across the decks. This little piece of history is well presented.-Edith Ching, St. Albans School, Mt. St. Alban, Washington, DC Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

    contains fascinating information

This "All Aboard Reading" book for "Station Stop 3" is about the events surrounding the mysterious disappearance of the Confederate submarine, the C. S. S. H. L. Hunley after it became the first submarine to destroy another ship in 1864 during the American Civil War, and its recent recovery from deep in the waters off the coast of South Carolina in 2000. What happened on that cold winter night? The author notes, "Scientists are finding out more about the Hunley all the time. Details may change, but the story of adventure and bravery will always stay the same." Even if you are not a Southern sympathizer, this book contains some fascinating information that young readers will enjoy.
