Overview

Foote's comprehensive history of the Civil War includes three compelling volumes: Fort Sumter to Perryville, Fredericksburg to Meridian, and Red River to Appomattox. Collected together in a handsome boxed set, this is the perfect gift for any Civil War buff.

Fort Sumter to Perryville

"Here, for a certainty, is one of the great historical narratives of our century, a unique and brilliant achievement, one that must be firmly placed in the ranks of the masters." —Van Allen Bradley, Chicago Daily News

"Anyone who wants to relive the Civil War, as thousands of Americans apparently do, will go through this volume with pleasure.... Years from now, Foote's monumental narrative most likely will continue to be read and remembered as a classic of its kind." —New York Herald Tribune Book Review

Fredericksburg to Meridian
"This, then, is narrative history—a kind of history that goes back to an older literary tradition.... The writing is superb...one of the historical and literary achievements of our time." —The Washington Post Book World

"Gettysburg...is described with such meticulous attention to action, terrain, time, and the characters of the various commanders that I understand, at last, what happened in that battle.... Mr. Foote has an acute sense of the relative importance of events and a novelist's skill in directing the reader's attention to the men and the episodes that will influence the course of the whole war, without omitting items which are of momentary interest. His organization of facts could hardly be bettered." —Atlantic

Red River to Appomattox

"An unparalleled achievement, an American Iliad, a unique work uniting the scholarship of the historian and the high readability of the first-class novelist." —Walker Percy

"I have never read a better, more vivid, more understandable account of the savage battling between Grant's and Lee's armies.... Foote stays with the human strife and suffering, and unlike most Southern commentators, he does not take sides. In objectivity, in range, in mastery of detail in beauty of language and feeling for the people involved, this work surpasses anything else on the subject.... It stands alongside the work of the best of them." —New Republic

    WOW!!

The sheer volume of information in this series is mind boggling, but the author ties all the battles as well as political cimate of the times into an amazingly smooth flowing read. It reads like a novel and I found myself holding my breath for the outcomes of the battles. Saw no bias towards either side from the author.

    Excellent!

This series of books is an excellent overview of the Civil War and provided comprehensive coverage of all the military campaigns (both army and navy). Though skewed toward the military aspect, it does cover in sufficient detail the political and economic intracacies. It is written to tell a story, rather than to earn tenure points, and there are no footnotes and references to defend a point of view. The ebb and flow of the book is smooth with no abrupt transitions. There are a few maps that paint the strategic picture - a few more detailed maps would have been nice - but nothing is lost without them. Mr. Foote opens and closes the trilogy with a salute to Jefferson Davis, demonstrating his partialilty toward the Southern cause. Mr. Foote also, at times, demonizes Abraham Lincoln, and makes references to him being 'creature-like.' But this compliation of Civil War history through the eyes of a southerner is not offensive. To the contrary, it is quite refreshing in a genre that is loaded with literature from the northern perspective. Good for both the amateur who wants a comprehensive overview and the specialist who would enjoy history from a slightly different point of view.

A Must for Those Who Love History

This is an impassioned view of the Civil War, impassioned not out of partisanship but out of deep love for our America. Reading it will be both horrifying and uplifting; but in the final analysis it is great literature that shares much in common with Thucydides History of the Pelopenesian War.

    Incredibly researched and interesting history

This consultant to the 'Civil War' series by Ken Burns did an excellent job in bringing to detail the day to day as well as broad issues faced by leadership and troops in the Civil War.

    Wonderful!

These books are simply the most enjoyable read I ever had. They are hard to put down, and when you are finished, you will wish this long story had more volumes. You will also want to read several biographies about characters in the books. Forrest? Grant?
