An excellent mix of Pynchon and Hunter S. Thompsonstyle writing style with a great story line.

    No spoilers in this post:

I put off purchasing this book because I thought it might be a mediocre PI novel. I also don't really care for New Orleans. I was pleasantly surprised. I could not put this down. The main character is very authenttic and downright lovable. The story is witty and never takes itself too seriously. This is the best novel I have read in over a year. I highly recommend it. Awesome read!

    A new heroine

A different kind of detective novel. Read with an open mind. I look forward to uncovering more of Dewitt's mysteries.

    !

Well, thanks to the long winded posters hellbent on spoiling books for others here is yet another book i cant get because u ruined it by revealing every detail of the book. Get a grip and stop ruining it for others. We have the synopsis which tells just enough to peek your interest. We do not need u telling every detail, thereby ruining the book. U have been reported to bn and i hope everyone else who is as sick of u ppl that persist in revealing every plot point will report u too. U must be stopped. Start a blig if u want to dissect every sentence but stop doing it here.

    Great Start to a Series

I really enjoyed this book and found the character very entertaining and interesting. I cannot wait for the next in the series.

    A Real Experience

All the way through this book, I wasn't sure whether I loved or hated it, but at the end, I was blown away by it. Claire DeWitt is not someone I would ordinarily choose to spend time with, but she is a fascinating character. Gran, clearly, is brilliant.

Very interesting novel with a great mix of philosophy and mystery. Claire is a unique protagonist who draws you into the story. The depiction of New Orleans is pretty spot on, surprised to see it isn't the author's home town. As a Louisiana resident Katrina and the healing that continues are very vivid. Sara Gran captured the way it haunts us.

    Too sad

This book could have been good but it spiraled down so depressingly that I couldn't finish it.

    O boy, no spoilers

I am only 55 pages in and im so glad i only paid a couple of bucks for this. I love the insight to the "grimey" part of new orleans, however, makes me nervous to visit. The author writes as a detective who keeps talking about a french book called detection. Its quotes take up alot of thought process & the story is taking too long to grab me overall. I usually read maeve binchy, slight mystery but light read. Or james pattersom which is written like only a true artist can. Maybe this book is too out of my comfort zone so far. If it gets easier to grasp i promise to commemt any amendments. Fingers crossed

Interesting detective story - but the detective is a strung out drug addict - which I find detracts from the detecting part of the story. A very different type of detective story.

    Fun read but...

This is a fun read but the grammatical errors are so glaring that it disrupts the flow. These are not typos or spelling errors, but fundamental grammatical errors, such as the difference between "few" and "less." This is told in the first person, so perhaps the author thought she had to create a personna outside of the direct dialog. If that us the case, it is unfortunate as it is jarring, when read.

    Not sure I'd recommend it

It was an interesting story. As a retired police officer, some of the heroine's escapades were a little hard to accept (and I realize that law enforcement in New Orleans is, historically, different, and after Katrina, even more so). Upon further reflection, I could have better spent my time.

Enjoyable read with great character development

I bought this because it was only $2.99 & my expectations weren't particularly high. I was pleasantly surprised & thoroughly enjoyed it. Yes the main character is an empath but this doesn't come off like a gimmick along the lines of the many blood sucking cheerleaders or mystic flute teachers we're inundated with nowadays. It's just another facet of a very well developed main character whose flaws make her believable. I haven't lived in New Orleans in many years but Ms Gran also captured some of the vital essence of the city & some of its denizens without romanticizing either. I look forward to more of the series.

    Pretty dang good read!

Ok, so sometimes I will buy a cheap book thinking "What the heck, it's 3 bucks" and I usually am always disappointed, but this time I was not! Starts out a little slow but picks up quickly. It has some twists and turns and just raunchy enough to give the characters some personality! I was actually disappointed that the follow up to this book has not been released, but I will definitely buy if and when she does release it!!

I did not always find this a comfortable read, but I was very intrigued by the seriously flawed and infinitely interesting main character. I would definitely read more Claire DeWitt stories.

Took me a month to read

I think this book was really terrible. It was all over the place. I can read 2+books in a week but this was like torture. Only giving it one star because i had no choice to do negative's.
