Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
A girl with shining blond hair, a toddler who could be the girl's younger sibling, and a dark-haired youngster whose features appear vaguely Asian are the stars of this gently buoyant, religious picture book. Each spread is filled by Speidel's misty pastels and a sentence or two of Helldorfer's spare, haiku-like verse (``Touch candle to candle. He changes air to petals of light''). Even the two drawings that feature the children in downcast moments exude an irrepressible zest for life. Some of the images tend toward the unrealistically pristine, e.g., the tow-headed girl's frilly white dress never seems to get smudged, even after a day spent frolicking outside. Nevertheless, this volume is far sweeter than it is sugary, thanks largely to its exuberance. Ages 2-7. (Oct.)
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2-Throughout the day, three joyful children revel in the Earth's delights. They spin, chase, stretch, and dance through a wonderland filled with brooks, trees, hills, and flowers. The text is brief and poetic. Each double-page spread carries a few sentences, all parallel in construction. A verb-sing, spin, hush, cry-begins each verse. What follows acknowledges the Lord's responsibility for everything. Most pages are triumphant, but a few are sorrowful. While it is desirable to show tears and repentance, their inclusion creates a somewhat unsettling break in the book's mood. In pastel coloration, the illustrations are reminiscent of the Impressionists' sketches. A valuable choice for those who want to share this message with children.-Nancy Seiner, The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh
Elizabeth Bush
Like a joyful psalm, this is a prayer that begs to be set in motion. A strong imperative verb starts off each of the 14 brief verses that celebrate an aspect of creation: "Clap clap! The Lord unrolls the day," or "Spin, then stop and feel his earth turning beneath our feet." The lyrical text is further enlivened by double-page pastel drawings of young children, captured in stop action and viewed from a variety of angles and perspectives. Simple enough for the youngest listeners and replete with possibilities for extension activities, this is a strong choice for Sunday and Bible school groups, as well as for individual readers.
