Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This small book overflows with interesting facts about Clara Barton. The biography is more informative than inspiring, but it piques a young reader's interest in Barton. The two-page chapters include a one-page photograph or illustration and one page of text. The straightforward language quickly provides the information that the chapter title indicates. The first chapter highlights Barton's achievements and explains the purpose of the American Red Cross. The following chapters chronologically tell of Barton's life as a teacher, her role during the Civil War, her assistance at helping families locate missing solders after the Civil War, her role with the International Red Cross, and her proposal to start the American Red Cross. Several photographs include a Barton quote. Like the other books in the "Photo-Illustrated Biographies" series, this one includes a list of Fast Facts and important dates. The biography also has a "Words to Know" section to assist the young reader. Curious readers will be excited to see the Read More, Useful Addresses and Internet Sites sections because these provide many resources for continued research on Clara Barton. 2003, Bridgestone Books/Capstone Press,
— Jackie Kirby
School Library Journal
Gr 2-4-These brief biographies present basic information on the life and accomplishments of these two women along with some anecdotal material that adds color to the texts. Each spread has a full-page photograph or reproduction facing a page of large-print, easy-to-read text. Quotes from the subjects are highlighted in boxes, but the language might be difficult for youngsters to read on their own. There is little else on Clara Barton for this reading level. Rosa Parks and Jim Haskins's I Am Rosa Parks (Dial, 1997) presents the same material as Dubois, as does David A. Adler's A Picture Book of Rosa Parks (Holiday, 1993). The format of these series entries will appeal to elementary students and there is adequate information for reports.-Marlene Gawron, formerly at Orange County Library, Orlando, FL Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
