Overview

Produced by R.E.M. producer Mitch Easter (Murmur, Reckoning, as well as Pavement's Brighten the Corners), you'd expect Clara Thomas' debut to be full of jangly, unpredictable modern rock. Surprisingly, their sound is upbeat alterna-pop, which would fit in perfectly in VH1's heavy rotation. Singer Clara Lieberath's voice is both gentle and soothing, while the music ranges from light funk ("Tired of Yawning") to the more straight-ahead ("Automatic Feeling"). But the band also knows how to come up with memorable, radio-friendly compositions (the destined for airplay "The Girl With the Strawberry Lips"), and more experimental and difficult-to-categorize songs ("Endless Line"). Other highlights include the beat-box snap of "I'll Give It Up," a beautiful acoustic track simply entitled "Fishes," and the uplifting Alanis Morissette-like "You Were Never Wrong." Although their style is similar to others, Clara Thomas' debut contains some very honest, genuine music.
