Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Fans of Clarice will enjoy this new package. Two paperback books--Utterly Me, Clarice Bean and Clarice Bean Spells Trouble--packaged with a notebook that is really more like a diary. The color-coded pages feature different formats, ranging from those with lines for writing to graph paper to blank pages, but one thing is consistent: at the bottom of each right hand page there is a little gem from Clarice. For example, "Pretending not to know things is much harder work than you might think," and "I am really utterly excited." In Utterly Me, Clarice narrates the story through diary entries about her daily life. Clarice loves to read the Ruby Redfort detective series and models her own thoughts after the fictional character, Ruby. Clarice is assigned a class project that includes both reading and researching someone who has made an impact on literature; she of course picks the current Ruby Redfort book that she is reading. Black-and-white pictures compliment the story well. The book is fast moving, suspenseful, and relates well to kids, especially with fun and quirky text. In Clarice Bean Spells Trouble, readers learn that many things in life puzzle Clarice, including spelling. Unfortunately for Clarice, her teacher has organized a school-wide spelling bee and she has little hope for success. Clarice once again relies on advice from her TV hero, Ruby Redfort, as she endeavors to win a part in her school play and help her friend, Karl, who seems to be having a tough time. In the process, she learns a bit of spelling, meets a wonderful new teacher, finds herself accused of vandalism, and winds up in a movie. Clarice is a very appealing character and sure toattract fans of Junie B. Jones and Ramona. Even when we see trouble coming for Clarice, readers know her heart is in the right place. Occasional small illustrations and typeface changes add some spark to the text, which is large and easily readable. Definitely a book to add to your collection for a fun and easy read.
