Overview

Tito Nieves emerged as a big winner from the New York salsa scene by trading on an affecting, formidable tenor that virtually explodes from his big, burly frame. Not only is he a strong sonero, but he almost single-handedly sparked the boogaloo (or bugalú) revival of the 1990s with his thumping cover of Pete Rodriguez's "I Like It Like That." Showcasing Nieves's exciting vocal range and unwavering enthusiasm, as well as a first-rate salsa orchestra, Clase Aparte is one of the sonero's strongest efforts. His voice seems to float with a will of its own over the driving rhythms of tunes like "Más," "Permíteme Darte un Beso," and "Nos Amamos," the latter featuring some robust piano work by Mariano Morales. Nieves also revisits the boogaloo era with some vital remakes of Jimmy Sabater's doo-wop-style ballad "To Be with You" and Barry Manilow's "You Begin Again." But the spiritual core of this album is Nieves's improvisational breaks, egged on by rhythm wizards Marc Quiñones on timbales and Bobby Allende on conga -- the same percussion team that anchors Marc Anthony's success. Tito does indeed prove here that when it comes to new salsa, he stands in a Clase Aparte.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - José A. Estévez
This is Tito Nieves' next-to-last RMM effort. Tito Nieves' powerful voice is used to full advantage, practicing the formula that has always worked for him: romantic salsa with additional English-language tunes. "Mas," "Permíteme Darte un Beso," and "To Be With You" (recorded by Jimmy Sabater in 1967) are pretty enjoyable.
