Overview

"Throughout training I kept having the thought,
WELL, ALL THEY CAN DO IS KILL ME.
It seemed to help."

SEALs are the world's toughest soldiers. Working in squads and platoons that make up SEAL teams, they are trained in everything from underwater demolition to high-altitude parachute drops. Now John Carl Roat, graduate of Class-29, one of the earliest SEAL training classes, has written the only book devoted to the training of that exclusive warrior force. With unflinching honesty, Roat describes the brutal six-month program that took young men well beyond the endurance limits even of gifted athletes and created warriors who could proudly take their places in the teams. It was a program so demanding that by the end of Hell Week, the third week of the course, the original class of one hundred and thirty-four physically fit young men had been sliced to sixty-two.

After retelling his own class's experience, Roat visits today's SEAL program and reveals how the program has changed over the last thirty-five years to include more classroom training and better and more sophisticated equipment— without at all lowering the physical demands. SEAL training is still the best, and the toughest, training in the world.

Meet the Author

John Carl Roat was born in 1942 in Flint, Michigan. In January 1963, he started Underwater Demolition Team replacement training with Class-29. After completing training, John served with UDT-21, UDT-11, and SEAL Team-1. In 1965, John married the former Judith Jo Younger. They have two sons, four grandchildren, and thirty-five years of marriage. Since leaving the navy in 1969, John has made his living as a commercial diver, diving supervisor, and diving consultant. CLASS-29 is his first book, and he is writing a sequel.

Superior book by one of the best SEALs in the business!

As a retired Navy SEAL with two tours of BUD/S instructor duty under my belt I supervised over twenty SEAL hellweeks. I can tell you for a fact that the realism and honesty J.C. Roat brings to the pages of Class-29 makes this book, without a doubt, the definitive primer on what it takes to become a United States Navy SEAL! It stands as the only legitimate treatment of a subject matter, far too often prone to hype and Hollywood glitz. If you want to know what the real deal is - read Class-29!

Sit by the fire when you read this

When you dive into John Roats book about UDT Training, it is though you are there yourself, freezing your a** off in cold water with sand in places on your body where sand should not be. John puts about as much life into BUDS Training as can be done without actually attending it yourself. To most arm chair warriors, this will be as close as we ever come to what happens during the creation of the mental and physical aspects of what it takes to become a SEAL. Excellent job, John, you have done the SpecWar Community proud.

A great, down-to-earth account of U.S. Navy UDT training

The author's retelling of what he and his fellow teammates went through during U.S. Navy Underwater Demolition Team training is an excellent account of determination and teamwork. This book is not a typical special warfare, shoot-em-up, Rambo-type story. It's just the real deal, no BS description of what it takes, and what kind of person has what it takes, to make it through the world's hardest training program. Alot of what John Roat describes about what he and his fellow teammates had to do, has parallels with many other aspects of everyday life; not just military training. Having the motivation, ingenuity, and just plain guts to tough it out when the going seems impossible, and you could just as easily quit. A great read!!

    Class-29 UDT Seal

This has to be the best book I have ever read. It takes you through BUD/s better than any other book out there. With descriptions of everything from Hell week to day and night evolutions to the dreaded Gig Squad, this book covers it all. Class-29 takes you on a ride through the toughest military training in the world and is covered in a way that once you start reading you'll never want to put it down. Anyone thinking about BUD/s should read this book. I highly recommend it.

    I read the Class-29 reunion copy -

The young men in this book come to life with the colorful discriptions. The story about the monkey has you laughing out loud. I am anxious to read the added chapters about the training today.
