Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Joyce Rice
Nia is a student in Mrs. Connor's class at Robin Hill School. The students have been working very hard all year, and Mrs. Connor has decided it is time for a party to celebrate their hard work. One of the mothers will need to lead the planning of the party, but, before anyone else can volunteer, Nia volunteers her mom. Nia is very proud of her mom and wants her teacher to know her mom, too. Nia's mom, however, is not comfortable participating in class projects because she does not speak English. She only speaks her native language of Spanish. Nia spends the weekend with her family cooking, watching television, and going to church, but she is unable to find a way to tell her mother about the party. On the day before the party, Nia tries to convince her mother that school will be closed on the next day. When that excuse does not work, Nia tries to convince her mother that she is sick and unable to go to school. As Nia's mother walks her to her school, Nia is finally able to tell her mother about the party but her mother has no response. She just tells Nia goodbye at the classroom door and walks away. This is a story about acceptance and understanding, as well as a story about the unique relationship between mothers and daughters. This is a "Ready to Read" title at level one, which offers children just learning to recognize words a way to feel that they are reading along. Reviewer: Joyce Rice
