Oh, no! It's the class trip from the Black Lagoon. The kids have no idea where they're going but they imagine a day full of ferocious animals, maniacal monsters, and scary aerial acrobatics. And their teacher, mean Mrs. Green, is going to quiz them on everything! When the kids stop letting their imaginations run wild they soon realize that they're going to a very cool zoo. But that won't change the fact that there's never a dull moment in the Black Lagoon!

A young boy's imagined school trip makes the real trip look mundane.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The first in the "Black Lagoon Adventures" series is sure to cause a riddle riot with readers everywhere. The text of this early reader is full of puns and quips for a fun introduction to word play. The ongoing adventures of this imagined class trip are full of ferocious animals, over-the-top bugs and monsters, and the meanest of mean teachers, Mrs. Green. Once the kids realize that their real class trip is simply to the zoo, nothing can be as bad as what they have already imagined. The sticker page seems a little out of place for this type of book, but the zany illustrations are a perfect complement to the wacky adventures. Readers will enjoy from the first page to the last. 2002, Scholastic Inc, Ages 7 to 10.

Meet the Author

Mike Thaler was born in Los Angeles in 1936. After moving to New York City, he started his professional career drawing cartoons for adults in 1960. A children's book editor saw one of these cartoons and encouraged Mike to write for children. Since then, Mike has written over 140 children’s books and has become known as America’s “Riddle King.” Mike says that writing and riddles are a powerful way to stimulate a child’s interest in learning and creating. He is an award-winning author and illustrator and has been called “one of the most creative people in children’s literature.” Mike currently lives in Canby, Oregon.

Jared Lee has illustrated more than 100 books for young readers. He has received awards from the Society of Illustrators, the Martha Kinney Cooper Ohioana Library Association, the National Cartoonists Society, and others. He lives in Ohio with his wife and a menagerie of dogs, cats, ponies, ducks, and a few unknown creatures.

    An Imagination of Educational History

A child¿s imagination soars as he/she reads about history and science facts and actual places that exist. The illustrations are brought to life as the child¿s creative mind absorbs educational information but don¿t close your eyes. Their mind may wonder to the bottom of the ocean or take a journey to the center of the earth. Could the center of the earth be like hot fudge on a sundae? The class trips are adventures that all children will not want to miss as they read how Mrs. Green lines up her students alphabetically while flying in a plane. She opens the planes door hatch, checks the children¿s parachutes and pushes them out. The students are graded on their ground landings.
