Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 4-6-- A collection from various storytellers and storytelling traditions, including Aesop, the Grimms, La Fontaine, Chaucer, Kipling, and Joel Chandler Harris. The illustrations include dramatic full-color plates and full-page black-and-white sketches that show animals who are intelligent and sly. This is sophisticated fare, with the look of a gift book, but not inappropriate for libraries. Most selections are available in other volumes, and many have been published individually as well. Confusingly, some familiar tales are identified by their lesser-known titles: ``The Three Goats Called Hurricane'' are usually known as ``Gruff,'' and ``The Council Held by the Rats'' is, of course, ``Belling the Cat.'' However, these are classics indeed, handsomely presented. Making these tales available to folktale and animal enthusiasts may inspire them to search for more. --Carla Kozak, San Francisco Public Library
