Overview

This "portrait" of Kathleen Battle is not full-length, in that it neglects the singer's work in opera. It does cover a wide range of music, however, including Baroque favorites, sacred songs and arias, folksongs, and even a movement of a Mahler symphony. The selections are drawn mainly from previously issued recordings, and Battle sings with a panoply of guest artists: Wynton Marsalis, Christopher Parkening, Grover Washington Jr., André Previn, and even electronica-meister Vangelis. Some recordings are new, however, and it is for these that Classic Kathleen Battle is most valuable. Battle fans will thrill to her delicate handling of Puccini's "O mio babbino caro," as well as her sexy rendition of Duke Ellington's "Prelude to a Kiss." Two of the tracks, both spirituals, are sung a cappella -- a stirring yet also intimate effect. Special mention must be made of the Mahler selection, the song "Das himmlische Leben" (The Heavenly Life) that ends the Fourth Symphony. It is the earliest of the selections here, and when it was recorded in the mid-1980s, Battle's voice was at its freshest and most beautiful -- a glimpse of heaven, indeed.
