In 1986, Chef Kamal Al-Faqih made his debut as the owner and head chef of the first exclusively Mediterranean catering company in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area (Med Catering, Inc.). Since that time, Chef Kamal's reputation for authentic and flavorful Lebanese cuisine has grown to be unmatched. During his twenty-year tenure as chef-owner of Med Catering, Inc., his authentic Lebanese dishes and signature classics were offered at events for Queen Noor of Jordan, King Abdulla of Jordan, Crown Prince Abdulla of Saudia Arabia, Senators George Mitchell and Barbara Mikulski, and celebrities such as Placido Domingo, Angelica Huston, and Francis Ford Coppola, as well as museums, White House events, and thousands of private parties and other events in Maryland, Virginia, and Washtngton, D.C. Born in the United States as the son of a diplomat, Chef Kamal received his formal culinary training at L'Academie de Cuisine under the instruction of Francois Dionot. Throughout his childhood, however, Kamal watched his mother and aunts prepare traditional regional dishes, providing him a natural authenticity and palate for Lebanese and Mediterranean cuisine. From the early 1990s to the present, in addition to his professional catering business, Chef Kamal has led a variety of cooking demonstrations across North America. From Georgetown University and the Middle East Institute in Washington, D.C., to dozens of private homes on the West Coast, Chef Kamal's charm and skills in the kitchen have introduced hundreds of individuals to heart-healthy and exotic Mediterranean foods for both formal entertaining and casual dining. In 2005, Chef Kamal relocated to Southern California, where he has been writing, preparing, and testing the recipes that comprise Classic Lebanese Cuisine.

I initially bought this cookbook because of all the wonderful colored pictures of the recipes...Being of Middle Eastern descent, I find it very difficult to find a cookbook that has "just like grandma used to make recipes" inside. This cookbook is as close if not right on the money of how my mom cooks and how my grandma used to cook! I am so glad I picked this cookbook up and can't wait for Kamal Al-Faqih to publish another cookbook!! Fabulous recipes, delicious flavors, and home-made Mid-East cooking at its best.

I fell in love with Lebanese cooking back when I was first dating Chris. The Andersons took us to Family Heritage Night at the Embers, and apparently they are from Lebanon. Oh the food was so good. Hummus, meat pies, lamb dishes, and a whole table full of different baklava. The best part of the night was the Turkish coffee they served at the end of your meal. I've been making hummus and naan on my own for awhile now. But I wanted more. So I found this cookbook and tracked down the author. You wouldn't believe how gracious they were about it, Chef Kamal autographed it for me!!! So here it is, does it live up to my expectations? Yes! It's not just a cookbook, it's an entertainment book. Chef Kamal gives ideas on meal plans for a party, and "helpful techniques." There is actually a lot of just straight reading in this book, and being that it's a culture that is different from my own, I ate it up. He even gives tips on preparing for a party so everything goes smoothly. Then the recipes...oh dear they look delicious. Everything has a picture, and he includes a breakdown of special ingredients and equipment you might need. I don't think there's anything in here I don't want to make. My favorites in this book are the hummus - he tells how to do with with dry garbanzo beans, which is something I've been meaning to try. And I will once I get a food processor again. The other recipe I loved was the Tabbouli Bites. I've made Tabbouli, but his unique change-up has you skip adding tomatoes and put the salad into hallowed out cherry tomatoes. It's for a party, turns the salad into a finger food, isn't that brilliant? I literally want to try every recipe in this book. The only thing that makes it hard is so many of the ingredients or equipment are unique so if you are broke, it's a little more challenging. Plus we live in the middle of no where, so even finding those ingredients is a challenge. If you are vegetarian or even vegan, you can find recipes in this book. Granted there are a fair number of recipes that use lamb and other meats, but he breaks down a lot of them into vegetarian choices first.
The recipes in this book are well written and easy to follow. I grew up with Lebanese food and this is a wonderful representation of the foods I've enjoyed all my life.
