This is an outstanding book from an author known for his knowledge and research of toy train subjects. Several years in the making, the book presents a rare, detailed look at Lionel toy train display layouts that were used as a marketing tool for selling toy trains in the '50s and '60s. Photographs and parts lists from the rare dealer 'Advance Catalogs' are presented along with detailed track plans and wiring diagrams (from the original Lionel instruction sheets) for many different displays ranging in size from 4' X 6' to 8' X 8' which will allow the reader to construct his own display (as I have done), or verify the authenticity of a rare collectible. This information, very hard to come by, is worth the price of the book alone. But Mr. Carp goes further and presents a brief but comprehensive history of the Lionel display department, brought to life by interviews with actual former Lionel employees of 'Department 15'. This is one of the finest toy train books to surface in recent times. I only wish that Kalmbach would make a hard cover version available, as I have had to buy two copies - my first has become excessively dogeared from constant use.
