Overview

CLASSIC LOVE is billed as "over two hours of the world's most passionate classical music." There certainly are moments of surging, hot-blooded excitement on this two-disc set -- as in the ecstatic "Liebestod" (Love-Death) from Wagner's "Tristan und Isolde" -- but most of the selections create moods of tender intimacy. The two CDs offer quite an assortment of styles, ranging from baroque bonbons like Albinoni's Adagio to romantic riches like the famous love theme from Tchaikovsky's "Romeo and Juliet." Some of the pieces have been shortened, doubtless to fit more music and increase the variety, so you only get excerpts from Ravel's "Bolero," for example. But once the music starts weaving its spell, you'll likely have other things on your mind besides textual authenticity.
