In her book "Classic Portrait Painting in Oils", Chris Saper gives recipe after recipe for creating wonderful portraits, with lovely photos that chronicle her process. From tools to canvas preparation to specific paint mixtures used, this information is complete enough to get a beginner started, and deep enough to guide an experienced painter to the next level. At the end of the day, artistic skill depends on individual practice and personal commitment. But Saper's volume gives so much good, useful, and practical information and step-by-step detail, her book has become a valued, permanent art reference in my library that I'll refer to again and again for inspiration.
