Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 6-9-Sixteen scripts adapted from classic American and British short stories and novels. These selections, from works as diverse as O. Henry's "A Retrieved Reformation" and Miguel de Cervantes's Don Quixote, vary in length (6 to 27 pages) as well as in quality. Some do manage to capture the essence of the story and the author's style, while others rely on far too much narration in an attempt to fill in cavernous gaps. Each "play" also comes with a story summary, an overview of the characters, some background on the author, and presentation and prop suggestions. Purists who believe that the classics must be read in their original incarnations shouldn't even pick up this collection; those who are willing to try almost anything with their students to spark an interest in English literature and the language arts may want to give it a try.-Betty S. Evans, Southwest Missouri State University, Springfield Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
