All Music Guide - James Christopher Monger
Part of Universal's popular, budget-priced Icon series, this double-disc set collects 22 chart-topping cuts from the '70s and early '80s that effectively mimic the classic rock radio station of your choice. Outside of a couple of curious inclusions, like the Motels' wistful (yet great) "Only the Lonely" and Billy Idol's post-new wave club rocker "Rebel Yell," Classic Rock Icons earns its well-worn moniker with ubiquitous road-trip classics like "Sweet Home Alabama" (Lynyrd Skynyrd), "Takin' Care of Business" (Bachman-Turner Overdrive), "Rocky Mountain Way" (Joe Walsh), and "We're an American Band" (Grand Funk Railroad).
