Overview

None other than Glenn Gould, the eminent and eccentric Canadian pianist/philosopher, deemed Barbra Streisand's voice to be "one of the natural wonders of the age." By 1976, when Classical Barbra hit the stores, Streisand had already proved that she could do much more than just belt out Broadway ballads. But this collection of classical art songs threw her fans for a loop. Since the early days of the record business, countless opera singers had attempted to croon pop songs. Now the Funny Girl was turning the tables, demonstrating a versatility that put most other artists to shame. She sings in French, German, Italian, and Latin, covering two centuries of music. Not everything here is flawless -- the German songs are a bit stiff -- but her musicianship truly is a marvel. Essential listening for music lovers who worship four B's: Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, and Babs.

All Music Guide - William Ruhlmann
One of Barbra Streisand's more esoteric projects, Classical Barbra is an album of European art songs composed by Debussy, Handel, Schumann, and others and sung in French, German, Latin, Italian, and English. Streisand is in typically good voice, and while the album must have been a stretch for her usual audience and a surprise to the classical audience, she carries the performances off.

This is one of Streisand's best. Her respect for the material is evident and her voice responds like this classic music was written just for her.

This album is superb! I "force" my guests to listen to it each Christmas and they always love it - sometimes to their surprise!
