Editorial Reviews

KLIATT
These two "visual guides" in DK's beautifully illustrated new Eyewitness Companions series focus on individuals and instruments as well as music history and styles. Classical Music, edited by a British concert promoter and organizer, begins by introducing the elements of classical music and discusses instruments and classical music in performance. It then goes on to describe eras in music history from the early music of 1000-1600 A.D. to the present, with profiles of the lives and work of major composers. Guitar, by a consultant and teacher of guitar history and music, introduces great guitarists ranging from Django Reinhardt to Jimi Hendrix, depicts and describes classic guitars in loving detail, and provides a lengthy guide to playing the guitar, along with a chord directory and information on care and maintenance. A directory lists resources for guitarists in the US and Canada. Both reference books conclude with a glossary of musical terms, and both attractive volumes, with their many full-color photos, will be welcomed in both public and school libraries. (Eyewitness Companions series). KLIATT Codes: JSA—Recommended for junior and senior high school students, advanced students, and adults. 2005, DK, 512p. illus. indexes., Ages 12 to adult.

Library Journal
DK has launched a new series, "Eyewitness Companion Guides," that aims to familiarize lay readers with various subjects using the design of its popular "Eyewitness" travel guides. Following introductory chapters on the technical elements of music, the instruments, and a brief overview of performance, this entry on classical music follows the standard sequence of historical periods (early, Baroque, and so on). But what works well for travel-color codes, icons, graphics, and minimal text-does not necessarily transfer well to the arts. Although each page is attractive, the amount of information provided is frequently too abbreviated, e.g., the plots of two Bellini operas (I Capuleti e i Montecchi and La Sonnambula) are described in a total of five sentences. The 300 composer biographies are rarely more than short summaries (even Beethoven receives only a half page), some contain "facts" that have long been discredited, and the number of compositions described rarely exceeds five. Outside of the most famous composers, the lesser figures included tend to be heavily weighted toward the United Kingdom and the United States. Although the book's goal is both unique and admirable, its sound-bite approach renders it virtually useless; not recommended.-Timothy J. McGee, Hastings, Ont.
